The Maldives is one of the lowest lying countries in the world and is threatened by sea level rise and other climate change impacts. It was the first country to sign the Kyoto protocol in 1997 and is closely following the current climate negotiations.

Activists from environmental organisation Greenpeace intercepted a vessel carrying e-waste destined for Mainland China on June 14. The import of e-waste is illegal in Mainland China but Hong Kong legislation provides loopholes, which allow the material to enter the country.
